British authorities has added 11 further destinations to its official advisory register about the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.

This revised warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a worldwide rise in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Just last month, authorities had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current register, after several high-profile events such as the fatal loss of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being cautions that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within 12–48 hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Methanol is a toxic industrial alcohol often employed in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not meant for human consumption.

While it is naturally produced during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms reduce it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the refining procedure.

Yet in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is extremely challenging to identify.

Official Guidance for Tourists

Authorities official a senior official stated that every traveler should know the indicators of methanol contamination.

"If you're drinking spirits abroad, opt for trusted places and avoid local brews or complimentary drinks," the official advised.

"If something feels off, for example a headache that's much more severe than usual or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."
